Flickers of Hope Amid the Ruins

  Listen

We're all over the map with this podcast, covering law, science, history, education, economics and politics, of course.

Iran: Well, there appear to be two distinct and continuing options: bomb, bomb, bomb and talk, talk, talk. We're afraid that time is going to force a choice. Very soon. Join us for more, including a little history.

United State Supreme Court Nixes Death Penalty for Child Rapist: We have some comments on the Supreme Court's June 25 5-4 decision on this Louisiana case which affirms the idea that the death penalty (with a couple of exceptions such as espionage) should be reserved for those cases in which someone is killed. We also include Sam's report on an NPR segment on the topic and Alabama Attorney General Troy King's blasting criticism of it.

Justice for Sale: That's how Larisa Alexandrovna and Muriel Kane describe the situation in the deep south in a gripping June 24 piece published in Raw Story, which describes how big tobacco and the GOP teamed up to crush Democrats, including trial lawyer Paul Minor, Mississippi Supreme Court Justice Oliver Dia, Jr., former chancery court judge Wes Teel and former circuit court judge John Whitfield. We hope this is not the end of the story, and you need to listen up for details.

Jill Bolte Taylor: A name unfamiliar to us until Sam heard an NPR report, this woman's story is fascinating. A hint: it's all about her brain and a stroke insight.

"Buffet warns that recession getting worse", published Wednesday by AP is cause for serious concern. As they say, when Buffet speaks, people need to listen.

Charter School Gives Hope: We love this story, "Against all odds: School offers hope, opportunity for young men", published Wednesday by CNN. We 're wondering why this Chicago charter school's mission of preparing young black men for college, promoting self-esteem and success which is working isn't being applied in every school district across the country.
