Politics- Presidential Race Getting REALLY Ugly: We slide into this topic with a great deal of trepidation, almost as if we talk about it, the worst possible thing will in fact happen. Join us with concern, as we discuss Pastor Conrad's prayer at a Davenport, Iowa Palin/McCain rally over the weekend (this one is really shocking), Frank Rich's "The Terrorist Barack Hussein Obama", published Saturday in the N.Y. Times, Sam Stein's "McCain Faces Backlash Over Rabid Crowds", published Friday on
www.huffingtonpost.com, and more. As an addtional note, today's Mobile Press Register carries an article about the October 13 Discovery Channel's 9 p.m. airing of Ted Koppel's documentary, "The Last Lynching", about the 1981 (you did read that corrrectly) Mobile, Alabama murder and lynching of african american 19 year old Michael Donald, plucked randomly off the streets by a couple of klansmen. A jaw-dropping concept, that 27 years ago there actually was a LYNCHING in the United States? We need say no more. Read, watch and listen, and hope Obama actually lives through the election. We hope that McCain and Palin are paying attention.
Economy: What's Up or What's Down: Sam weighs in with a Business Week article by Robert Berner and Brian Grow concerning two Attorneys General from North Carolina and Iowa who approached the feds 5 YEARS AGO with a strong warning about the state of the economy, begging for latitude to control the greed in unreasonble interest rates through giving the states power to control what is a traditionally federally-controlled area. Apparently they were met with deaf ears and look where we are now. We also discuss two October 12 L.A. Times articles, "Bank rescue plan to test capitalism" by Michael Hilzak and Ken Bersinger, and "Financial troubles spread to credit unions" by E. Scott Reckard, which together help all of us understand what the bailout may (or may not) do, how buying into banks may save money in the long run, and how credit unions are both different from, but at the same time are in the same financial boat as banks. We then segway back to the election with "Obama rides a wave of bad economic news", published Sunday in the L.A. Times. We can't say this a fun segment, but we can say it's important. No guarantees here. Listen up!
Law: Sam finds some comic relief in a story involving a "natural" blonde who filed a lawsuit against L'oreal, claiming that the company negligently placed a brunette dye in a blond dye package, causing her to suffer mightily, as blondes have more fun and she no longer had as much so she was forced to stay home and wear baseball caps. Deidre wonders whether the blonde was illiterate or was color-blind. You've got to listen to this segment!
