Economics - A Listener Weighs In: We open the podcast with the story of one of our "mature" listeners, not only compelling, but also one that many others will experience, we fear. A woman who went to college and obtained an engineering degree after her husband left her and their two young children, she finds herself without a job and health insurance because her boss replaced her with someone fresh out of school who would cost him less. Knowing there are no jobs in her field in this economy, she is back in school, hoping that she can get a job in an entirely different field, but fears her age will be an impediment. Listen in for a real dose of reality.
Alabama Politics: We focus on a race for a seat on the Alabama Supreme Court, with Alabama Criminal Appeals Judge Greg Shaw and Circuit Judge Deborah Bell Paseur vying for the post. According to Robert Leslie Palmer in a September 28 Anniston Star op-ed, nothing has changed. While Shaw's contributions are running about $70,000 ahead of Paseur's, seems that Republican Shaw has attracted only 188 contributors, averaging $3,145 per, as opposed to Democrat Paseur's 1,147 contributors averaging $367 per. H-m-m-m-m, and what does this mean, exactly? You must join us to find out, as we also refer to Bert Brandenburg's "Alabama Court Campaign Heating Up Fast", published October 10 in
www.gavelgrab.org.
Presidential Race - Not So Fast: For those of you who are becoming confident about the outcome of the Presidential election, we urge caution about the aftermath, referring to Paul Waldman's "The Permanent (Smear) Campaign" , published October 14 in
www.prospect.org. After laying out four goals that, if accomplished, could make Obama the most important President since F.D.R., Waldman goes on to caution that many of those who resent his election will continue to work to make sure his presidency goes down in flames. And for those who still believe that McCain might win, we turn to Robert Scheer's "Hoover, 2008: McCain's Bogus Reform", published October 15 in The Nation. A must-listen segment.
We plan to return October 20. Until then, tell a friend. Keep those emails coming!
