The Nuclear Mess and How We Got There By Doing Nothing To Stop It: Jeff Stein's "The Nuclear Bombshell That Never Went off", published Oct. 19 in the Congressional Quarterly is a real eye-opener. Seems that Richard Barlow, former CIA and Defense Department expert told the House Foreign Affiars Committee 20 years ago that Reagan and Bush the elder officials were looking the other way while Pakistan acquired U.S. technology for its clandestine nuclear weapons program. Later, as it turns out, Pakistan turned around and sold nuclear equipment and technology to North Korea and Iran, and attempted to do the same with Iraq. So was Mr. Barlow rewarded for giving up this important information? Hardly. And did anyone do anything about it? Of course not. A must-listen segment.
Another Recess Appointment Looms? According to Amanda Terkel, "Bush May Recess Appoint Homophobic Surgeon General Nominee", originally posted on Think Progress. Say what? Yep, that would be James Holsinger, who appeared before the Senate Health Committee back in July. Since that time, the Committee sent a follow-up questionnaire to the good doctor which was due to be returned in early August. Guess what? No response. Of course a recess appointment would avoid further controversy and allow Dr. Holsinger to serve until the end of the current Congress until late 2008. Sigh.
